  6.      There is finally some information
  7.    available  on  the  Commodore  C128
  8.    computer: Commodore 64/128 Assembly
  9.    Language   Programming,   and   The
  10.    Official Book for the Commodore 128
  11.    Personal Computer.  Both  of  these
  12.    may   be   available   at  a  local
  13.    bookstore,  but  can   be   ordered
  14.    direct  from  the publisher, Howard
  15.    W.  Sams  &  Co.  Inc.   at   (800)
  16.    428-SAMS, operator 150.
  17.      I got both of these books as soon
  18.    as I  heard  about  them,  and  was
  19.    promptly   disappointed.   This  is
  20.    because I'm  interested  in  really
  21.    technical  things  like: a detailed
  22.    memory map  of the C128 in C128 and
  23.    CP/M  modes, a detailed description
  24.    of    the    hardware    and    the
  25.    memory/device manager.
  26.      The    Assembly   Language   book
  27.    glossed  over  the  C128  and  CP/M
  28.    modes  by  discussing the C128 only
  29.    in C64 mode, where  it's  identical
  30.    to the C64.
  31.      The  'Official Book' for the C128
  32.    was   more   satisfying,    though:
  33.    seperate  chapters  on each mode of
  34.    the   C128   (including   a    good
  35.    introduction   to   CP/M  and      's
  36.    commands),     a     chapter     on
  37.    peripherals,  discussion of the new
  38.    BASIC 7.0 commands,  a  chapter  on
  39.    graphics     (using    BASIC    7.0
  40.    commands), and a final  chapter  on
  41.    music  and  sound (again, BASIC 7.0
  42.    commands, mostly). There are memory
  43.    maps  for  each  mode,  showing how
  44.    ROM, RAM, and the I/O  devices  are
  45.    arranged,  and  the  memory/ device
  46.    manager     is     described     as
  47.    'intelligent', which is intriguing.
  48.      Overall,  the  latter  book  does
  49.      contain a lot of  good  information
  50.    for anyone considering the purchase
  51.    of a C128  system   (or for  a  new
  52.    owner)  with  it's  descriptions of
  53.    Basic  7.0  and  CP/M,  along  with
  54.    discussions  of  software  for each
  55.    mode and how to get  public  domain
  56.    software free).
